This is the newest and best unit of the FlameBoss lineup.  The 500 adds a 4-line, 64 character backlit screen on the control unit, and has ports for all of the probes (no more y-adapters.)  It also comes with a removable 2-way magnetic mounting bracket.  It has a standard 1/4x20 UNC female fitting on the back, so just about any tripod, flexible arm, or camera mount can be screwed into it (really expands your mounting options!)
This unit can direct connect with your Android or iOs device if internet is unavailable.  If you're going to be travelling outside of its broadcast range (300ft) and want to be able to monitor/control, then you will need a router with internet access in its vicinity.  Also, the Flame Boss can now be controlled through most voice assistant devices!
This unit accepts/reads up to THREE meat probe at a time (one included.)
Just like the 200, 300, & 400 before it, it's a Wifi model and put all the data & graph on a website or app for you to see.  It will notify you through alarms or via text message when the MEAT temp is reached, or if the PIT temp falls out of parameters and it is unable to compensate (like running out of charcoal.)  You can set it to automatically ramp down the pit temp (to keep warm), once the meat reaches its target temp.  It has lid-open detection where it will halt the fan until it detects the lid being closed.  It will also automatically search and download new firmware anytime it is connected to internet access.

If you have a kamado smoker AND another non-kamado smoker, no problem!!  If they are larger units, better to order the Universal model, then add the kamado adapters (because the universal comes with a larger fan and the ENTIRE universal adapter kit.)  But it may save some money to order the kamado model if both are smaller units and you don't need the universal manifold.  The control unit, probes, algorithm, etc are all identical, the only difference are the included adapters.  When in doubt, SEND US A MESSAGE with what smokers you have.....we'll figure it out and shoot you a quote on the right setup.
About the probes:
This unit *can* monitor up to THREE meats at a time, and then uses the other probe to monitor and control pit temp.  It *includes* ONE pit probe and ONE meat probe.  If you want two be able to monitor ONE (or TWO) extra MEATs, you need to order ONE (or TWO) extra MEAT probes.  If you remember the old FB300--where you needed y-adapters/splitters, not any more--no y-adapters needed!
It's a good idea to get an extra meat probe and/or pit probe.  Reason being, these are the sacrificial parts in ANY temp controller or monitor.  They are exposed to high heat, flames, humidity, etc.  They WILL fail eventually and your temp controller is worthless without the pit probe.  These probes are covered under warranty, but you'll be down until we can get you new ones.  Get an extra one of each NOW, to have on hand when they do fail some day in the future.  To prolong the life--wrap the exposed wires in foil, always keep them in indirect heat, do not submerge in water, be careful not to smash when closing lids/doors on them, and do not subject them to extreme heat (i.e. these are to control temps in your SMOKER, not your pizza oven.)

because if you get one that has been sold through an unauthorized dealer and/or has been stolen, it can be "
bricked
" the second you try to connect to the internet.  Make sure you verify the seller is an authorized dealer by looking on Flame Boss's site (you will see us listed under ZIP 63025.)  So, buy will confidence that you will not have any issues should you require warranty support.  On the off-chance you ever need it, Flame Boss is a great company to work with.  They are quick to respond and hassle free.  And to the scammers out there, we record every serial number than ships with the buyer's name.....so don't even try return a bricked one, stop payment on your credit card, etc.
